Want to have a go on the potter's wheel and also hand-build a beautiful pot ?
We welcome you to have a taste of both at The Ceramicists Studio!

Our studio is very spacious, warm, cosy and full of clay-spiration.
We are passionate ceramicists and will make sure you make the most of it.

A demo of hand building with coils will kick off the workshop and after that, you can get your hands messy with pre-made coils by us (so the boring prep part is out of the way!).

Once you’ve nailed the coiling technique, we can simultaneously start throwing on the potter’s wheel - you will get two goes on the wheel - one with our guidance and another where you can freestyle!

By the end of the taster workshop you will have 2 bespoke ceramic pieces AT NO EXTRA COST (one hand-built and another thrown on the wheel) that we will fire and glaze (transparent glaze), which takes 3-4 weeks.
After this, they will be ready to collect from our studio or we can deliver them (UK only) to you at an added cost.

Please arrive 5-10 minutes early to ensure you get to see the coiling demo at the start of the workshop, otherwise you interrupt and shorten the class for everyone. We have a strict policy on late arrivals. We will do our best to go over the demo for you again however we must end the workshop at the intended time, so we cannot extend your workshop time.

The only thing lacking was towards the end, as the class didn't feel as though it was rounded up. We attended this class as a date. The space, people, equipment and tools were all excellent. We felt comfortable and had a really enjoyable experience. It is worth arriving a few minutes early so you can work out exactly where the studio and the entrance are and get settled in before the class starts.

The most difficult part was deciding what to try to make and how to decorate it. The group instruction was clear and well-structured. The class and activities moved along at a good pace so we didn't feel rushed or dawdling. Help was provided to fix mistakes and recover pieces which had started to go wrong. (I dug a whole clean through my wheel thrown piece - deftly fixed with a lump of clay.)

Some individual instruction was provided, along with feedback on errors or issues. We felt able to ask questions and get sensible answers we could understand.

Getting the pieces back takes a few weeks (don't have ours yet). That could be a bit better, and some more guidance (such as some clear options to choose from - make A, B, C or whatever you want, and some more examples of designs and how to achieve them would be welcome improvements - but these aren't complaints - just thinking about whether there's any way to make this taster class better.

Ultimate taster session: Hand sculpt a vessel and throw a dish. All to be taken home.

Build a foundation of ceramic skills to start practicing and creating your own beautiful ceramic pieces. We provide 6 sessions running through all hand building techniques, slip casting, throwing on the wheel, slab building, hand sculpting with coils and decorating with glazes and slips. 

Every Monday evening for 6 weeks from 6 - 8.30pm!

We would like to think you leave with new knowledge, inspiration for your clay journey, and even new friends who share your clay love! 

After the 6 weeks, you are entitled to join our studio open access* with a free induction (worth £30).

In this class you’ll be learning all the fundamentals of ceramics. It’s materials, techniques, and processes. from fresh clay to finished glazed pieces. Your teacher shall guide and support you with demonstrations of each technique along with one-to-one guidance.

Week 1 : Intro to clay - what can be done at pottery studios and small manufacturing processes, how it works from start to finish, also the health and safety in the studio. Pinching pots is the first technique you get your teeth into. Finishing off with glaze samples for future use.

Week 2: Preparing the perfect slab for structural creations. Coiling vessels or sculptures!

Week 3: Slab building with your prepared slabs! Get geometric-n-groovy.

Week 4: Throwing and slip casting , we will show you how to throw on the wheel. We believe that throwing is a skill which evolves at your own pace and with lots of practice, after the demo you can practice more on the wheel if you wish so, or can carry-on your hand-build pieces if that’s what you enjoy most.
Exploring the industrial process of casting a bowl or cup with a ready made plaster mould! You will learn how to decorate straight from a mold and cast your first manufactured-like piece of tableware!

Week 5: Decorating, learning the possibilities in decorating, finishing your pieces. use colour under glazes or colour slips to add colours. Press on marks , carve out patterns. the possibilities are endless, all you need is your own inspiration 🙂

Week 6: Finally Glazing! You’ll be glazing all your pieces either with brush-on or pouring or dipping techniques depending on the shape and size of your pieces.

Clay and glaze are ALL INCLUDED! but firing is at £1.50/ litre (size of 2 pint glass), payable in cash or card at collection.

By the end of the 6 week course, we will make sure all your pieces are glazed and fired, which takes 3 / 4 weeks - unless you are returning for open access to continue working on your pieces.

*After the full course you are welcome to join our Open access for free without a £30 induction. Open access is charged at £10 per hour including clay and glazes (firing pieces are added costs), for you to make full use of our facility independently at your own pace but without our guidance. Open access has flexible times!

A great day spending time in a professional studio environment. Filled with their commissions and personal works, it's an amazing  place to learn. Both Kevin and Stephanie were super friendly and very hands on in helping me create my pot! I learned a lot about different types of clay, the best techniques to build in coil and even got to see all the different types of glazes that they use. They teach you everything you need to know about hand building and are really great in making sure you're on the right track. We even extruded the clay, which is satisfying to say the least!
